The VeilHow can you allow the creative side of who you are to express itself more fully?

The Artist's Way book coverBuy a copy of The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron and start an Artist’s Way group!

I helped form a group here in Ann Arbor, Michigan July of 2004. As of January 2007 we are still meeting every other week and exploring how to be more fully creative, We’ve fallen off the Cameron path and are now making it up as we go along. Sometimes we have an evening of doing something like drawing mandalas, or another evening we might go to a local art show.

One of the folks in the group went to a weekend workshop given by art therapy and painting guru Stewart Cubley. I went to the process arts web site and watched some online video of what the workshop is about, and noticed there was a cLife, Paint and Passion book coverompanion book Life, Paint and Passion about the process. I bought a copy online and read the book. It’s great. I couldn’t afford the cost of the course, but really wanted to do some of the work. Luckily a much more affordable course talk by a local Ann Arborite fell into my lap. Dianne Austin taught a one day paintinMonte busy paintingg course along the same lines as Cupley, called Art as Spiritual Practice. Aileen and I went and had a wonderful time.  Dianne mixed meditation with some painting tips and cut us loose. I’m planning on doing more of this at home, while I work my way though Life, Paint and PassionClick here for some pictures I took of the folks busy painting at Bernie and Dottie Coyne’s beautiful Sunnyside setting.

RightHandSide02Another book I highly recommend for recovering artists is Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. A number of years ago I took a drawing class that used the book and had a wonderful time. I watched folks that could only draw stick people when we started the class transform their art into finely detailed creations. There are many easy to learn tricks on how to perceive and draw like an artist that Betty Edwards shares.

Even gotten tired of the everyday work world and wondered if you could make a living doing art? I’ve been talking folks who have done just that.  I’ve heard some great stories. I’m beginning to videotape some of the folks I talk with and plan on putting them up on YouTube and Google Video sometime in the future.
